‘It’s not all about enjoyment’ — Barcelona’s Hansi Flick sends stern warning to Yamal

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has sent a clear message to teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, reminding the 17-year-old that talent alone won’t sustain a long career at the top.

In a recent interview with Barcelona’s official media channel, Flick praised Yamal's genius but stressed the importance of discipline, hard work, and mental preparation if the youngster is to continue thriving at the highest level for years to come.

Flick, who guided Barcelona to a stunning domestic treble in his debut season, acknowledged the crucial role Yamal played in their title run.

The young forward not only dazzled fans with his flair and confidence but also led the LaLiga assist charts with 13, adding nine goals of his own in the process.

Despite the holiday break, which Yamal is currently enjoying in Brazil with Neymar, Flick has cautioned against complacency.

“I often say it: he’s a genius. And he’s 17, we have to help him,” Flick told Sport. “So far, everything’s fine. If he wants to play at the highest level for the next 15 years, he needs to train very well and prepare himself mentally. He’s smart. It’s not all about enjoyment; you also have to work.”

Flick also pointed to experienced teammate Raphinha as a model professional Yamal can continue learning from.

Fitness coach Julio Tous had already predicted a special season back in pre-season, telling Flick: “With the things I’m seeing, I think we will win La Liga.”

His foresight proved true, as Barcelona stormed to a domestic treble with Yamal firmly in the spotlight.

Now, the club’s focus is on keeping their young prodigy grounded. While the headlines praise his brilliance, Flick remains committed to building more than just a season of success, they want a decade of dominance with Yamal at the centre.
