Joel Embiid dumps Cameroon for USA: NBA MVP set for Paris 2024 Olympics

According to ESPN, Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid, the current NBA MVP, has pledged to represent Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Just days after their quiet hour-long meeting in Fort Collins, Colorado, where the Sixers are conducting training camp, Embiid notified Team USA executive director Grant Hill of his choice.

The choice of which nation Embiid would represent at the Olympics has been the subject of a heated recruitment campaign.

He was born in Cameroon and is a dual citizen of France and the United States.

At media day, Embiid admitted to being really undecided between the three possibilities.

After failing to win a medal at the FIBA World Cup in Manila this summer, according to ESPN, Embiid ultimately decided to play for the United States out of a desire to see his country rise to the top of the international basketball scene.

LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers and Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, both former league MVPs, have both indicated interest in working together to support Team USA at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The desire to compete for the United States in the Summer Games and the chance to earn a gold medal in front of his 3-year-old son, Arthur, who was born an American citizen in 2020, motivated Embiid, the current MVP.

The 2024 Games host nation, France, had wanted to persuade Embiid to play for its team but now have no chance.

Cameroon was an option as they picked up a pre-qualifying ticket in Lagos, Nigeria but now their hopes are dashed.
