The world champion made his much-anticipated return to MotoGP, qualifying directly for Q2 ahead of tomorrow's Czech Grand Prix at Brno.
Jorge Martin looked comfortable on his RS-GP despite the tricky conditions at Brno, finishing 0.721 seconds behind pacesetter Marc Marquez.
What Jorge Martin said
Speaking to the media, via Sportal, Martin expressed satisfaction with his performance and explained the challenges he faced in his first day back, which included his first experience riding the Aprilia in the wet.
"Absolutely, we're back. I'm happy to say that. The important thing is we're giving our all and performing at our peak. Today was difficult because of the mixed conditions, and I had to really concentrate. I lost some laps because I wasn't as consistent with my lines as I was last season. But it's just a matter of time to get that back.
"They pulled me in after four or five laps because I kept running off track," Martin said. "I was focused. It was my first time in the wet with this bike, so it wasn't easy. I managed to adapt to the bike, to get a feel for the tires. I'm happy to be in Q2; that's important. But the most important thing is that we are growing together and building confidence."
The world champion also stated that the private test he conducted at Misano last week was crucial in preparing for his return. This test was made possible after a rule change in MotoGP, which Aprilia strongly advocated for.
"The good thing about Aprilia is they pushed for that test. That day, I had time to do more laps and adapt progressively, without pressure and without cameras. I found a good position on the bike, and today we improved it further. I already feel like this is my bike; I feel comfortable, in a good position.
"I don't know what to expect from qualifying; we'll see what happens. I will give my best to have a good qualifying session. Hopefully, I can get a tow from a fast rider! If I have a good starting position, I will try to stay with the front group," Martin explained.
