George Weah's Son Joins Marseille: Timothy Weah Completes Transfer to Ligue 1 Giants
Timothy Weah, son of former Liberian President and Ballon d'Or winner George Weah, has officially signed for Olympique Marseille, marking his return to Ligue 1.
The USMNT winger joins Marseille from Juventus Turin on a loan deal with a mandatory purchase option, as confirmed by the club's announcement on social media and Football Italia.
The transfer, reportedly structured as a €1 million loan plus a €14 million obligation to buy, with additional €3 million in potential add-ons and a 10% sell-on clause for Juventus, is valued around €17–20 million.
Weah, 25, began his career at Paris Saint-Germain’s youth academy in 2014, made his professional debut in Ligue 1 in 2018, and also played for Lille before moving to Italy.
Weah’s time at Juventus was challenging due to limited playing time and injuries, which slowed his progress. His move to Marseille is seen as a fresh start to revitalize his career under coach Roberto De Zerbi.
Marseille, last season’s Ligue 1 runners-up, have now added Weah as their sixth summer signing, alongside notable players like Facundo Medina, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Igor Paixão, Renan Lodi, and Geoffrey Kondogbia.
The signing is strategic both on and off the field, as Weah who carries the legacy of his father brings Ligue 1 experience, pace, and international appeal to Marseille, who are strengthening their squad depth to challenge for the title.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, Weah aims to secure regular playing time and reaffirm his position in the US national team ahead of the global tournament.
Marseille expressed optimism about Weah’s influence, highlighting his humility, determination, and potential to make a significant impact.
The US international's preferred move to Ligue 1 over other offers, such as from Nottingham Forest, stresses his desire to play in a familiar environment that suits his style and ambitions.
