Spanish national team head coach Luis de la Fuente has played down suggestions that Gonzalo Garcia was ready for a La Roja call-up, stating that the 21-year-old had yet to earn his stripes.

The young striker has proved a revelation during the Club World Cup for Real Madrid, ensuring Los Blancos do not suffer the absence of the Frenchman's goals.

The Spaniard is the joint top scorer in the competition with four goals; hence, there have been suggestions that De La Fuente call him for national duty, given the current situation of the country.

What de la Fuente said

The former Spain U-21 coach praised Garcia's talents but added that he needed to get more games under his belt before he could be considered for the national team.

"He's earning the right to be a national team player in the future, but the important thing is not to rush into things or get carried away,” he said.

“ He's not looking for a short or immediate performance. He hasn't played a single second in the First Division. As they say in my town, you have to do a bit of military service to earn the opportunity and the right to occupy positions with top-level players.

"I hope there are many Gonzalos, [Dean] Huijsens, or Lamines [Yamal] who can guarantee our future and present."

Meanwhile, Getafe president Angel Torres revealed that they had an agreement with Real Madrid to sign Gonzalo Garcia before the Spanish striker's incredible scoring form at the Club World Cup.
