Nigeria Super Eagles defender Ebuehi to spend Christmas in danger zone with Empoli
These are not the best of times for Nigerian defender Tyronne Ebuehi and his Italian club Empoli after another defeat in the Serie A.
Ebuehi was in action as the Azzurri suffered a 2-0 defeat to former manager Maurizio Sarri and SS Lazio on Friday night.
Ebuehi’s performance against Lazio
The talented Super Eagles fullback enjoyed another outing for his Serie A club as he featured from start to finish.
Ebuehi, 28, started his ninth game of the season but despite an average display, Lazio were just too strong and good for him and his teammates.
The Nigerian international tried to inspire his side with his offensive run, which earned him the most fouled player in the game badge.
He also created two chances and made two key passes, with three touches inside the Lazio box.
Defensively, the former Benfica man won 100% of his tackles and made one block, one interception, four recoveries and four clearances.
Lazio compound Empoli’s woes
Former Arsenal star Matteo Guendouzi and Mattia Zaccagni were the scorers on the day for Sarri’s Lazio.
Guendouzi gave the visitors a first half lead before Zaccagni wrapped things up in the second half.
However, Lazio have goalkeeper Ivan Provedel to thank as he turned out to be the ultimate difference maker with his stunning saves.
Provedel indeed proved himself with seven saves to deny a spirited Empoli en route to keeping a clean sheet and helping Lazio return to winning ways at the expense of their hosts.
With the result, Lazio ended a run of three matches without a win while Ebuehi’s Empoli extended their winless streak to five matches, with back-to-back defeats.
That means there will be little to celebrate this Christmas for the Nigerian and Enpoli as they remain in the relegation zone with just 12 points from 17 matches so far.
