Nigeria's Beyond Limits become first African team to win Viareggio Cup in Italy
Nigerian academy side Beyond Limits has written their name into the record books after being crowned champions of the prestigious Viareggio Cup in Italy.
Pulse Sports Nigeria reports that the Remo Stars Academy starlets defeated C.N Brazzaville 2-0 in the final to become the first-ever African team to lift the trophy in the tournament’s long history.
Beyond Limits make Nigeria proud
Spearheaded by a squad comprised entirely of Under-17 starlets, Beyond Limits were simply a class above the rest as they sailed through the event undefeated.
A 2-0 victory over Congo’s Brazzaville in the final capped off a dominant showing that saw them score 24 goals across their seven matches.
Goals from Kparobo Arierhi and an own goal in the finale ensured the Nigerians finished the fairytale run in style.
Arierhi calmly converted young winger Isaac Chukwudi’s cross to open the scoring. They sealed the win when Oluwaseyi Ogunniyi’s delivery was turned into the Brazzaville net.
The squad is expected to receive a hero's welcome when they touch down in the country following a brilliant journey in Italy.
