Okocha always tells me – Alex Iwobi reveals the high praise he receives from Super Eagles legend
Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has given fans a rare glimpse into his personal life, revealing the words of encouragement he constantly receives from his legendary uncle, Jay-Jay Okocha.
The Super Eagles star made this revelation while appearing as a guest on Nigerian YouTuber Chinasa Anukam’s dating show, 'Is This Seat Taken?'
Okocha’s influence on Iwobi
During the candid chat, Iwobi, 28, did not hold back his admiration for the Super Eagles icon, calling him his 'GOAT' both on and off the pitch.
“In the sport, forever my uncle, Jay-Jay Okocha. Have to shout him out all the time,” Iwobi said.

“He’s a legend on and off the field. I used to go and watch his training sessions, and his matches. He’s the one that really taught me to express myself, and feel okay doing so.”
But Okocha’s mentorship goes beyond football, as Iwobi revealed that the former PSG and Bolton Wanderers star has also played a crucial role in shaping his career and personal life.
“Off the field, he’s just advising me on how to like… be professional, manage my money. How to move, and stay humble and grounded. So he will always be my idol,” Iwobi added.
The Fulham star also shared that Okocha regularly tells him how proud he is of his football journey, a sentiment that clearly means a lot to him.
Iwobi meets Super Eagles new boss ahead of crucial World Cup Qualifiers
Meanwhile, Pulse Sports previously reported that Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle recently travelled to England to meet with Nigerian stars, including Iwobi, as he prepares for the all-important 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Nigeria is currently ranked fifth in Group C of the African qualifiers, making their upcoming matches against Rwanda on March 21 in Kigali and Zimbabwe on March 25 in Uyo crucial to their chances of securing a spot at the World Cup.
Before finalising his squad, Chelle will return to Nigeria following his European tour to complete preparations with the domestic-based Super Eagles players.
