‘Our labours were not in vain’ - Nigerian presidential aspirant Peter Obi appreciates Super Eagles players despite draw
Nigeria drew 1-1 with Zimbabwe in Uyo during their 2026 World Cup qualifiers, in which they needed to claim all three points.
Victor Osimhen gave the Super Eagles the lead late in the second half, but Zimbabwe got the equaliser in injury time to salvage a point.
Following the draw, Nigerian presidential aspirant Peter Obi has come out to thank the players for their effort in the game.
Peter Obi’s message to Super Eagles
Peter Obi was present at the Godwin Apkabio Stadium on Tuesday to watch the Super Eagles' disappointing performance.
After the game, he wrote on his X account, “Our national football team, the Super Eagles, is always a delight to watch.
“Yesterday, I travelled to Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, where I joined a host of other sports-enthusiastic Nigerians to support the Super Eagles as they played the Warriors of Zimbabwe in their sixth match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.

“As usual, our team demonstrated the true Nigerian spirit of strength, resilience and dedication on the field of play. Football, and indeed sports, has remained a strong unifying factor for our nation battling with disunity.
“While we may not have clinched the victory on the field of play, our dear players have, again, won our hearts with their obvious display of sportsmanship.
“I sincerely appreciate our dear national football team and, indeed, everyone whose efforts and sacrifices got us far in this journey. Our labours were not in vain. A new Nigeria and a new Africa are possible.”
The draw puts the Super Eagles in a difficult position to qualify for the 2026 World Cup as they remain fourth, with six point in Group C.
