The tall striker's incredible acrobatic backheel finish against Konyaspor last season cemented his status among the world's best.

The goal was scored late in the game in the 85th minute to seal a dramatic 2-1 victory for Trabzonspor.

What Onuachu said

Onuachu thanked Trabzonspor's supporters for their steadfast support during his tenure at the club and conveyed his gratitude for the honour in an interview that was cited by Turkish publication 61saat.

He said, “I had wonderful days there. I always felt the incredible support of the fans. Their contribution to my success is great.”

There will be intense competition for the prize as Onuachu's goal enters a shortlist that also includes outstanding performances from Mohammed Kudus and Alejandro Garnacho.

Onuachu had a difficult time in England after joining Southampton in January 2023, despite his outstanding play in Turkey, where he scored 17 goals and dishevelled four assists in 25 games.

The attacker spent the entire season on loan at Trabzonspor after failing to score in 12 games for the Saints. He is currently back in Southampton, with his future still uncertain.
