Report: Manchester United to replace Onana with Ghanaian-born goalkeeper

Andre Onana’s time as Manchester United’s undisputed No. 1 may be running out, and the Red Devils are reportedly scanning Serie A yet again in their hunt for a new man between the posts.

This time, they’ve set their sights on a rising star, Parma’s Ghanaian-born Japanese international, Zion Suzuki.

Zion Suzuki’s name may not yet ring out in Premier League circles, but over in Italy, the 22-year-old has been quietly turning heads with his performances for newly-promoted Parma.

After moving to the Italian side from Belgian outfit VV Sint-Truiden for €7.5 million plus bonuses just last summer, Suzuki has swiftly grown into a key figure between the sticks.

Born in the United States to Ghanaian and Japanese parents, Suzuki represents Japan at the international level and is now being heavily linked with one of the most high-profile goalkeeper gigs in world football.

Manchester United’s scouting network has been focused sharply on Serie A, and after considering Milan's Mike Maignan, the club appears to be shifting its focus to the more financially accessible Suzuki.

According to Spanish outlet AS, the Red Devils are now "pushing harder" for the Parma shot-stopper, who reportedly has a €40 million release clause that becomes active at the end of the season.

At that price, Suzuki presents a relatively low-risk, high-upside move for United, especially when compared to the €55 million they splashed on Onana just two years ago.

Onana’s turbulent spell at Old Trafford has not gone unnoticed. The Cameroonian was brought in from Inter Milan in 2023 with great fanfare, but a string of errors and a struggle for clean sheets has left fans and club officials alike frustrated.

The pressure on Onana has only intensified as Manchester United continue to struggle defensively, with murmurs growing louder that the club needs to rethink its goalkeeping strategy entirely.
