School is NOT for me - Lamine Yamal reveals his mother’s anger after swapping his studies to play football
Lamine Yamal is only 18, but his story already reads like a modern football fairytale.
From growing up in a cramped apartment to becoming Spain’s youngest star and a Barcelona first team regular, Yamal’s journey is both inspiring and controversial.
The teenager has now opened up about the decision that changed everything: leaving behind school studies to pursue his dream of football greatness.
What did Yamal say?
Speaking on José Ramón de la Morena’s podcast, Yamal confessed how he broke the news to his mother, Sheila Ebana.
“One day I called my mom and said: ‘Mom, I’m going to go to school, but I’m not going to do anything. I’m going to get ready for training this afternoon.’ And she replied: ‘What have you taken?’ I said: ‘If I focus, I’ll be a soccer player.’
"She yelled at me every day, but she finally understood. I don’t recommend this to anyone, but it was my dream, and I achieved it.”
Yamal admitted that he once considered studying for a degree while balancing football, but quickly realised it was not for him.
“I would have liked to study a degree, but I’m not cut out for it. I told my parents: ‘If you depend on me for work, we’re screwed. But if I become a footballer, don’t worry, because I’m going to be a footballer.’”
From one-room flat to global stage
During the interview, the Barcelona wonderkid also spoke about his humble beginnings.
“I came from an apartment where the kitchen and bedroom were in the same place. I see my mother happy, I see that my brother can have the childhood I would have wanted, and that’s what makes me happiest.”
Now a European champion with Spain and a vital figure at Barcelona, Yamal is not just chasing goals but a dream of winning not one, but multiple Ballon d’Ors.
The Spanish sensation returns to action in LaLiga this weekend, when Barcelona play Valencia on September 14.
Yamal would be looking to help the defending champions get back to winning ways, having dropped points before the international break with a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano.
