With this performance, young Delap equalled a record set by Super Eagles legend and ex-coach Finidi George.

During the match against Aston Villa, Delap gave Ipswich an early lead with a clinical finish just eight minutes into the game.

Later in the second half, with Ipswich trailing, he produced a brilliant solo effort, running half the length of the pitch and beating Villa’s defence to score his second goal and seal a valuable point for the Tractor Boys.

Delap’s strikes were his second and third in the league, making him the only player to have scored for Ipswich at home this season.

Delap rewriting history

Thanks to his brace against Aston Villa, the former Manchester City forward became the first Ipswich player to score a brace in the Premier League since Marcus Bent achieved the feat in 2002.

Additionally, Delap matched Nigerian legend Finidi George’s record, becoming the first player in 22 years to score in back-to-back Premier League home games for Ipswich.

Finidi scored in back-to-back games for Ipswich in the Premier League against Aston Villa and then Tottenham, becoming a folk hero for the Tractor Boys.
