Super Falcons coach talks tough: Nigeria can beat Botswana

The Super Falcons of Nigeria are brimming with confidence ahead of their crucial second group match against Botswana at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). 

After a commanding 3-0 victory over Tunisia in their opening game, head coach Justine Madugu has declared that victory against Botswana is well within reach as the Falcons aim to maintain momentum on their quest for a historic 10th continental title.

Coach Madugu, speaking ahead of the clash at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca, stressed the team’s focus on their “Mission X” target.

“As I said before the commencement of the tournament, we remain focused on Mission X,” Madugu stated according to a post from the team on social media. 

He added, “We believe that victory over Botswana is a huge possibility, we are taking it one match at a time without taking any team for granted.” 

The Nigerian side, ranked 36th globally and boasting nine WAFCON titles, enters the match with strong momentum after goals from Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and Chinwendu Ihezuo secured a dominant win over Tunisia.

Botswana, making only their second WAFCON appearance, are still seeking their first point after a narrow loss to Algeria in their opener after losing their opener to Algeria. 

Led by young striker Refilwe Tholakele and coached by Basimanebotlhe Malete, the Mares have will ho[e to play smarter and stronger. 

However, Nigeria’s depth and experience pose a significant challenge. Madugu is expected to maintain a balanced 4-3-3 formation, blending midfield control with wing play. 

Rising star Esther Okoronkwo, who impressed off the bench against Tunisia, could start alongside captain Rasheedat Ajibade and Rinsola Babajide to stretch Botswana’s defense. 

Tactical adjustments and clinical finishing will be key for the Falcons to secure all three points and advance confidently toward the quarterfinals.

The match kicks off at 8 PM Nigerian time on Thursday, July 10, 2025, and will be broadcast live on DSTV, Supersport, and Afrosport. 

With Nigeria’s rich history and current form, the Super Falcons are expected to dominate and continue their chase of a record-extending continental glory.
