The revered broadcaster, known for his deep knowledge of the game and lively analysis on Sports Xtra shows on one of Tanzania media stations, was fatally shot outside his home in Dar es Salaam on Thursday, October 30 — a casualty of Tanzania’s post-election chaos.

According to reports from Tanzanian media outlets, Tindwa was standing at his doorstep when he was struck by a bullet.

The veteran journalist was not among the protesters, but police sources and eyewitnesses suggest he was an innocent victim caught in the crossfire as anti-riot police clashed with demonstrators protesting alleged electoral irregularities.

“According to Jamiiforums.com, Tindwa was not participating in the protests. He was simply at his home when tragedy struck,” one report stated.

The award-winning broadcaster’s death sent shockwaves across East Africa, with fans, colleagues, and sports lovers flooding social media with tributes.

“Goodnight, Legend Master Tindwa Mtopa. Sports Xtra nights will never be the same,” one heartbroken fan posted on X.

Another wrote, “Rest easy, champion. Your voice made our evenings brighter. This tragedy reminds us how unsafe the country has become for ordinary citizens.”

A Voice That United Football Fans Across East Africa

Tindwa, who worked with Clouds Media Group until his death, was well-loved for his charisma and football expertise. His colleagues described him as “a kind soul with a big heart and an even bigger love for the game.”

Before joining Clouds TV, Tindwa had also worked with Radio One and ITV, where he honed his reputation as one of Tanzania’s finest sports analysts.

On the night before his untimely death, the journalist hosted his final episode of Sports Xtra, dissecting the Tanzanian Premier League matches with his usual enthusiasm. Hours later, his life was tragically cut short.

“He had just finished recording, full of life and laughter,” a colleague at Clouds TV recalled.

“No one could imagine that would be the last time we’d see him.”

Tindwa’s passing came amid widespread unrest following Tanzania’s disputed elections.

Protests erupted across major cities after opposition leaders were barred from the race, including Tundu Lissu of Chadema and Luhaga Mpina of ACT-Wazalendo.

Police have been accused of using excessive force to quell demonstrations, leading to multiple deaths and injuries.
