Arsenal held talks with Morata's representatives during their trip to Spain for the Champions League match against Girona.

However, Mikel Arteta’s troops were beaten to the punch by Galatasaray, who moved quickly to secure the 32-year-old's signature.

The Gunners’ interest in Morata came after they failed to sign Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa.

Watkins was their top target but Villa were unwilling to sell. Arsenal also considered a move for Evan Ferguson but were unable to sign him on loan due to Premier League rules.

Morata would have been a short-term solution for Arsenal but he would have brought experience and quality to the squad.
