The four-time world champion's current contract with Red Bull expires at the end of 2028, and his future has been the subject of speculation for months.
Leading theories suggest a move to Mercedes as early as the end of this season, while others believe he'll see out his contract with Red Bull before retiring from the sport.
What Verstappen said
However, speaking to The Athletic, via Sportal, Verstappen himself revealed what would entice him to stay in Formula 1 longer.
"Sometimes people stay longer for the money, but ultimately that's not the driving force. The important thing is being here because you're hungry to win. Some are here to get the most out of their cars because they don't have race-winning machinery."
"That's exactly my thinking: as long as I can do this and work with people I enjoy working with, then yes, I'll keep driving. I don't know when I'll stop. Will it be at 32, 35, or 36? I don't know, it's impossible to say," said Verstappen, who became a father for the first time earlier this year.
"I already feel like I'm missing out on so much with my family. I spend my holidays with them, but I miss the more casual moments and the ordinary life.
"We live quite far apart now, so those moments are impossible with my lifestyle. I hope one day I can live a more normal life," added the Dutchman regarding his family.
