Nigeria's Victor Boniface and his Werder Bremen endured a frustrating afternoon at home, succumbing to a ruthless Freiburg side that capitalised on every opportunity.

The match saw forward of Nigerian descent Junior Adamu and his teammates secure a decisive victory, leaving Boniface and his Bremen side to rue a series of missed chances and defensive errors.

The game started with promise for the home side. A swift counter-attack saw another Nigerian Njinmah get a good look at goal, but his shot was straight at the keeper.

However, the visitors quickly asserted control, looking more purposeful in their possession in the thrilling encounter.

The breakthrough came in the form of a penalty, awarded when a poor touch by Bremen's Puertas led to a handball.

Freiburg captain Grifo stepped up and coolly dispatched the spot-kick, firing it into the top right corner and giving the visitors a deserved lead.

Bremen's woes compounded in the second half. Just nine minutes after the restart, Adamu doubled Freiburg's lead. A precise cross from Grifo across the six-yard box found the Nigerian forward, who made no mistake from close range.

While the home team were given a lifeline with a penalty of their own just three minutes later, Schmid's powerful strike was brilliantly saved by Freiburg keeper Noah Atubolu, another player of Nigerian descent.

The introduction of Boniface, who made his debut last weekend, on the hour mark did little to change Bremen's fortunes. Despite having more of the ball and leading the shot count, their attacks lacked conviction.

The final nail in the coffin came in the 75th minute when Bremen’s Coulibaly inadvertently bundled the ball into his own net, sealing a miserable day for the hosts.

Boniface's frustration was palpable, as a late yellow card capped off a disappointing home debut.

This result will sting for Bremen, who failed to convert their chances and paid the price for defensive lapses. For Freiburg, it was a display of clinical finishing and tactical discipline that moves them up the table after beating Bremen away again for the sixth time in the last nine games.
