The 22-year-old, who arrived at Stamford Bridge in June 2025 with bold ambitions of winning silverware, has started his Chelsea journey in the best way possible by lifting the Club World Cup.

Delap was instrumental in Chelsea’s successful run in the tournament, which took place in the United States.

What Delap said

Speaking from the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey after Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

He said, “It’s a great start for me. Now we have to push on into next season and bring more trophies home to this special club.”

Delap came off the bench in the final but watched with delight as Chelsea stormed to a three-goal lead before halftime, thanks to an inspired performance by Cole Palmer.

Palmer, who came through the Manchester City academy alongside Delap, bagged a brace and set up Joao Pedro’s goal in a commanding display.

“There was a lot of talk before the game about Paris Saint-Germain being favourites,” Delap said.

He added, “But we had the confidence and belief. We knew if we executed the game plan we would win. We showed that.”

He also heaped praise on his former academy teammate Palmer, stating, “Everyone understands that Cole is incredible; he is a special player. But every man on the pitch had their role. We had to be hungry and fight for every ball, every challenge. And then when we had our chances, we had to be clinical. We did that.”

Despite his quick success, Delap isn’t getting carried away. His focus is already shifting toward the upcoming Premier League season.

“I’ve only been here a short time, but I can see everyone is so dialled into what the head coach wants, and everyone is hungry to win,” he said.

He continued, “We have proved that, and hopefully we can keep proving that in the future.”

The striker’s intensity and commitment will no doubt endear him to Chelsea fans, who are eager to see the club build on their Club World Cup success in the 2025/26 season.

“We have got to keep that winning mentality and win more trophies,” he added. “It’s a really special group, and I think we can go on to do special things.”

Delap’s transition into Chelsea’s setup has been rapid. After only a few training sessions with his new teammates at Cobham, he was on the plane to the U.S. as part of Chelsea’s squad for the Club World Cup.

He made his debut in the Blues’ opening game against Los Angeles FC, where he immediately impressed by providing a precise assist.

His first start came shortly after, against Flamengo, and he netted his first Chelsea goal with a composed finish against ES Tunis sealing Chelsea’s place in the knockout stages.

Although he missed the semi-final due to suspension, Delap featured in all other matches and was unlucky not to score in the final against PSG, having two goal-bound efforts denied by the brilliance of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
