What will the Super Eagles miss as Finidi George targets dominance with Rivers United?

Former Super Eagles coach Finidi George has set his sights on transforming Rivers United into a dominant force in Nigerian and African football.

Pulse Sports reported that he was appointed as the club's new head coach following his stint with the national team; George is eager to take on the challenge.

"I think it's a new chapter for me, and I like the challenge. I want to help the club grow and become a dominant force in Nigerian and African football.

"I'm happy with the project the club is looking at, and I see a lot of potential for growth and success. The vision of the club aligns with my ambitions, and I believe we can achieve great things together," George told SportsBoom.

The ex-Ajax winger revealed that Rivers United is actively reinforcing its squad with new signings ahead of the 2024/2025 season. With a focus on securing a top-three finish in the league, George is optimistic about the club's prospects.

"We have a talented squad, and I believe we can achieve great things together. My philosophy is to play attractive, attacking football that will excite the fans and bring success to the club," he added.

Meanwhile, Finidi George stepped down as the coach of the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, in June 2024.

The 53-year-old's decision came after a disappointing start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria's campaign was marred by inconsistent performances, with a 1-1 draw against South Africa followed by a shock 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic.

The poor results have left the Super Eagles' qualification hopes hanging by a thread, prompting Finidi George's resignation.
