Why I chose Nigeria over USA — Super Falcons heroine Michelle Alozie reveals ahead of WAFCON final
Super Falcons fan favourite Michelle Alozie has explained what it means to represent Nigeria, especially to her family.
Though born and raised in the United States, the 28-year-old has found deeper meaning in wearing the green and white of her heritage.
Alozie reveals she always wanted to play for Nigeria
The Houston-born defender, whose parents are from Imo State, made her Super Falcons debut in 2021 during the USWNT Summer Series.
Speaking to BBC Pidgin, she explained, “I just knew that I always wanted to have a Nigerian name on a Nigerian jersey.”
That emotional connection extended into camp life, where the shared culture among teammates made the environment feel like “an automatic sisterhood.”
The warmth and intensity of Nigerian fans also struck a chord. “They bring us a lot of support and encouragement,” she said. “It’s amazing to play for them and for something bigger than us.”
WAFCON heroics and a legacy in motion
Alozie’s impact for Nigeria on the pitch at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has mirrored her passion off it.
She scored a stunning 94th-minute screamer against South Africa to send Nigeria into the final, avenging their 2022 defeat.
Her partnership with Chinwendu Ihezuo has caused chaos for opponents, and she’s been just as vital in defence.
After helping thrash Zambia 5-0 in the quarter-final, she now aims to deliver Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON crown.
