Cheptegei will be running his second half-marathon after debuting in Gdynia, Poland in October 2020.

Joshua Cheptegei will go into the New York Marathon on Sunday with two things in mind; one is to win the race but also to shape his body for the upcoming World Championships.

Cheptegei will face a tough battle against his fellow compatriot Jacob Kiplimo who beat him to the 2023 World Athletics Cross Country Championships last month in Bathurst, Australia.

“I’m very excited for my first race in New York City,” Cheptegei told World Athletics ahead of the race.

“One of the primary goals for 2023 is to defend my 10,000m gold medal from the World Championships, and this half marathon is an important part of those preparations.

Cheptegei will be running his second half-marathon after debuting in Gdynia, Poland in October 2020.

The World Championships will be hosted in Budapest, Hungary later in August this year. Cheptegei is the defending champion after running his season’s best in 27:27.43 to win the World Championship in Oregon last year.
