The last time he made the cut to the national team was during the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Former Africa Under-20 champion Kipng’etich Ngeno is among just fifteen athletes invited to vie for two slots in Team Kenya's 800m at the upcoming World Championships.

Ngeno has it all to do in the two-day trials penciled for Nyayo stadium in Nairobi as he must attain the required time in addition to finishing in the top two to get himself in the plane and end his four-year absence from Team Kenya.

The last time the 22-year-old represented the country was during the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar where he finished sixth in the Semi-final to deny him a chance in the final of the 800m.

The youngster will be lining up among others Emmanuel Korir who comes to the trials dangling a wild card. Also in the race are already qualified runners in the shape of Wycliffe Kinyamal and a host of others.

“After the 2019 World Championships I went to campus and around that time, the Corona Virus pandemic struck the country.

I couldn’t compete and during that time, I added a lot of weight and most of my time was dedicated to my job. Since I had added weight, my body took long to respond but I am now coming back,” he said.

“The victory wasn’t easy because there were big names in that start list. I appreciate my coach for training me well and my training mates in Kericho for their support,” he said.

He also emphasized on teamwork and noted that it will help Team Kenya as they gear up for the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

He added that at the moment he shall be working on his speed ahead of the National trials scheduled for Friday and Saturday (July 7 and 8).

“When we work together as a team, everything will be possible. At the moment, I am just working on my speed…I can’t promise anything but we shall see how the trials go,” he said.
