Despite missing out on the world record, Eliud Kipchoge will still go back home with a smile on his face since he will receive a fat paycheck.

Four-time London Marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge went into the 2023 edition of the Berlin Marathon with lofty ambitions but missed out on achieving some of his targets.

Kipchoge wanted to set another world record but missed it after clocking 2:02:42 to win the race. Debutant Vincent Kipkemoi finished second in 2:03:13 as Ethiopia's Tadese Takele completed the podium in 2:03:24.

His world record stands at 2:01:09 and the time he clocked was far much slower than his world record time.

With his win in Berlin, the 38-year-old will pocket Ksh Ksh 7,355,000. For finishing within the 2:03:30 bracket, he will also earn an additional additional Ksh 4,413,000.

He will also be paid participation money and will definitely be paid by his sponsors for his exploits. This means he will make over Ksh 10 million.

Second-place finisher Kipkemoi will pocket Ksh 3,751,050 for his dominant display that saw him set a Personal Best time. Ethiopia’s Takele will walk away with Ksh 1,838,750.

Ronald Korir, who finished fourth, will be awarded Ksh 1,103,250. The fifth-place finisher will bag Ksh 735,500 while the sixth-place to 10th-place finishers will walk away with Ksh 441,300 each.

Amos Kipruto who finished seventh will bag Ksh 441, 300 but will also receive additional tokens from his sponsors and the participation fee.
