The former 100 meters national record holder’s decision to submit his qualification pathway indicates his clear intent to bounce back.

Kenyan sprinter Mark Otieno has presented his Olympic qualifying pathway to the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) as he continues to attempt to rebuild his career following the expiry of his two-year doping ban.

Otieno has revealed that he is looking forward to qualifying for the prestigious event, thanking the support he has received since his ban expired.

"Courtesy call to the National Olympics Committee of Kenya offices. We were warmly received by their team led by SG Francis Mutuku. I appreciate their guidance, counsel, and support. I look forward to qualifying for Paris '24 and doing what I know best! For Jesus and my country," Otieno wrote on his X page

Otieno tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid methasterone just moments before competing in the Tokyo Olympics 100M heats in 2021.

However, Team Kenya requested Sample ‘B’ analysis after Mark claimed innocence, suspecting there had been laboratory contamination.

The incident prompted the Ministry of Sports to issue a statement on the matter maintaining the Government's commitment to the fight against doping.

Otieno maintained his innocence in a statement via his social media accounts, saying he "would never engage in any activity that would jeopardize me or my teammates."

"Representing my country in the Olympics is a dream that I have had for many years and it is truly devastating that this dream and the trust all my supporters and country have placed in me has been cut short."

He subsequently requested a re-analysis of his 'B' urine sample. Team Kenya suspected there had been laboratory contamination and appealed.

His appeal turned out to be successful, and his initial three-year ban was reduced to two because he had doped “unintentionally”, which now means that he will be eligible to take part in the 2024 Olympic games.

The former 100 meters national record holder’s decision to submit his qualification pathway indicates his clear intent to bounce back.

Otieno clocked 10.39 in his first competitive race following his two-year doping ban after coming second at a meeting in Italy.
