National Resistance Movement Vice-Chairperson -Eastern Uganda, also patron of the Uganda Boxing Federation, has pledged to petition for better funding and investment in facilities for boxing in Uganda.

Mukula made the remarks at the grand reception of the Uganda national boxing team at his residence in Bugolobi.

Seventeen boxers represented Uganda at the Africa Elite Men's and Women's Championships in Yaounde, Cameroon, where Uganda won seven medals and about Shs196m in prize money.

In the financial year of 2023/24, a total of Shs48.9bn was availed to the sports sector.

However, Uganda Boxing Federation was allocated Shs300m, sharing Shs6bn with 13 other federations, including Table Tennis, Chess, Cycling, Golf, Volleyball, Badminton and Swimming.

"We shall talk with the First Lady, the Speaker, Minister Ogwang that there should be an increment in the budget for boxing because they have shown that they have the potential," he said.

"Money has been invested in the high altitude centre, and we want the government to do the same with boxing."

"Boxing should get more equipment, facilities and enough rings too. One ring is 30,000 dollars, but it can make more changes in sports development in the country," Mukula added.

He also appreciated the Uganda Boxing Federation for leading the way in uniting youths in slums to take up the sport and get involved in productive activities.

"I take this opportunity to commend Uganda Boxing Federation for uniting the youths, especially from the ghetto."

"We will write a letter to the President to help the team so that they start early preparations for the Paris Olympics."

"It is important that we put more money into this investment which brings in returns and capitalizes the ability of the young people, especially those from the ghetto, to work hard."

Uganda's Wasswa Ssali (lightweight) and Erina Namutebi (welterweight) secured silver medals.

Bronze medalists included Ukasha Matovu (welterweight), Ronald Okello (lightweight), Solomon Geko (heavyweight), Grace Nankinga, and women's captain Emily Nakalema.
