Magistrate Ritah Kidasa Newumbe denied Muhangi's initial application for bail when he was first presented at court.
Moses Muhangi, the President of the Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF), is set to return to court on Wednesday morning for the hearing of his bail application.
Muhangi has been in custody for the past twelve days, initially spending 48 hours under police custody at the Central Police Station in Kampala before being remanded at the Luzira Prison.
The charges Muhangi faces, including forgery and falsification, have landed him in this legal battle.
His arrest was ordered by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) following a recommendation for further investigation by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
Recently, Muhangi appeared before the PAC to address concerns raised by the auditor general's report regarding the federation's financial reports, which highlighted several unaccounted funds.
As a result, Muhangi and the former UBF accountant, Lydia Namuleme, were forwarded to the Police CID for further scrutiny in relation to allegations of forgery, uttering false documents, and misappropriation.
Muhangi had initially been granted the opportunity to record statements at the CID in Kibuli on Monday afternoon, addressing the audit queries.
After recording his statement, he was allowed to leave with police bond, which was valid for 48 hours.
However, he was unexpectedly called back to the CID, where he was presented with fresh charges against him.
This sudden turn of events resulted in his detention, allegedly due to "pressure from elsewhere," as indicated by CID officers.
Magistrate Ritah Kidasa Newumbe denied Muhangi's initial application for bail when he was first presented at court.
Now, Muhangi awaits his next court appearance at Nakawa Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning, around 09:00 am, for the bail hearing.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the boxing community and sports enthusiasts in Uganda closely watch the outcome of Muhangi's bail application with the hashtag ‘Free Muhangi’ trending in the days preceding his arrest.
For now, all eyes will be on the Nakawa Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning, as Moses Muhangi faces the proceedings that will ultimately decide whether he will be granted bail or remain in custody as the legal process unfolds.
