The Victoria Pearls captain Consy Aweko is pleased about the development, it is a stepping stone to our success, and it means a lot," she told Pulse Sports.

The Uganda Cricket Association could not have chosen a better day to announce a significant milestone in the Women's game.

In a press release sent out to all media outlets on Women's Day, the Association announced that 12 players on the Women's national cricket squad, the Victoria Pearls, had been awarded contracts which would be reviewed every after four months.

The milestone was the first in the women's national team, let alone in Ugandan women's cricket.

The Victoria Pearls captain Consy Aweko is pleased about the development, it is a stepping stone to our success, and it means a lot," she told Pulse Sports.

"It's an assurance for us to play cricket throughout the year but, most importantly, train knowing that we shall be paid at the end of the day."

Consy also noted that the move is a boost because it lays a foundation for the upcoming women cricketers, who will be encouraged to play the game even after their regime is done.

"It has given us that assurance that they are (association) is fighting for us, they are willing to see us change our game, but it is also a foundation for the next generation."

Based on their performances last year, the 12 contracted players are categorized into two groups, A and B.

Category A has seven players led by Aweko, Kevin Awino, Janet Mbabazi, Evelyn Anyipo, Immaculate Nakisuyi, Rita Musamali and Sarah Akiteng.

Category B has five players in Stephanie Nampiina, Irene Alumo, Phiona Khulume, Patricia Malemikia, and Gloria Obukor.

The Victoria Pearls are preparing for several series in 2023, with the Victoria Series at home, the annual Kwibuka in Rwanda, and the T20 World Cup Qualifiers in South Africa all set to take place this year.
