36 Lions emerge champions as Barcelona-backed Lagos City Cup ends in style

The four-day scouting tournament was sponsored by Barcelona and Atletic Sant Just in partnership with NNL club Ikorodu City.

It was fanfare and jubilation for 36 Lions as the maiden edition of the Lagos City Cup came to an end on Tuesday.

The Lagos City Cup was a scouting competition put together by Spanish clubs FC Barcelona and Atletic Sant Just in partnership with Ikorodu City and the Lagos State Sports Commission.

36 Lions defeated Prince Kazeem Eletu by a narrow 1-0 in a dramatic final to seal the title in what was a keenly-contested final at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

At the end of the four-day intensive scouting featuring over 200 youngsters, 22 players were selected by the Barcelona and Atletic Sant Just scouts as the best.

It was a clash of Philosophies as Prince Kazeem Eletu faced off against 36 Lions in the final of the Lagos City Cup.

Kareem was interested in letting his players express themselves in the final of the competition put together to scout players for European club.

For Kazeem, letting his players show what they can do was the only way for him and that defined his tactics in the final.

However, his opposite number, the Lions, the tactic was simple - just win.

Prince Kazeem Eletu missed a penalty in added time and received N200, 000 as runners-up.

The Lions set up in a deep block and hit PKE on the counter and it was this approach that led to the early goal which they held on to until in added time when PKE got a lifeline.

The referee pointed to spot following a hand ball in the Lion's box, ironic cheers from Kazeem bench followed the decision as they confidently believed they were the better side and should be winning.

They were confident of their player scoring the penalty, but it ended in premium tears in what turned out to be the last kick of the match.
