Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund have taken crucial steps to sign Marcel Sabitzer, who spent the second half of last season on loan with Manchester United.

Borussia Dortmund close in on Sabitzer signing

Sabitzer joined Manchester United on loan from Bayern Munich, and despite some impressive displays, the Red Devils declined a chance to sign him on a permanent basis, allowing him to join Borussia Dortmund this season.

The Austrian international will join Borussia Dortmund in a €19 million transfer from Bayern Munich, according to reports in Germany, and could complete the deal in the coming days.

Dortmund lost two midfielders this summer in Jude Bellingham, who joined Real Madrid, and Mahmoud Dahoud, who left for Brighton and would see Sabitzer as an option to bolster their midfield options.

Dortmund hoping to usurp Bayern Munich with Sabitzer signing

Dortmund narrowly missed out on the Bundesliga title in 2022/23 season, losing out to Bayern Munich on the final day of the season after a 2-2 draw against Mainz on the final day, and have pushed to sign Sabitzer from the Bavarians, hoping he can help them dislodge their rivals from the top of German football.

Sabitzer helped Manchester United to the EFL Cup title, FA Cup final, and UEFA Europa League quarterfinals during his brief spell at the club, and Dortmund will hope he can bring similar success to their side in the 2023/24 season.

He scored three goals in 18 appearances, including a brace in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinal against Sevilla in his best match for the Red Devils last season and also showed his quality with five goals in Bayern Munich's 27-0 pre-season win.

Dortmund will be hoping for many more performances like that if they are able to sign the Austrian from Bayern Munich.
