He continued, "I think you saw 18 months ago, we saw a club that was struggling in terms of a lean squad, as many historically top players had left for other competitors in Kenya and abroad. We had to promote a lot of players from the youth academy, we had a transfer ban, and a significantly reduced budget."
McKinstry pointed out the shift in the club's financial landscape, saying, "If you go back five to six years ago, K'Ogalo was one of the clubs with the biggest budget in the league and one of the biggest budgets in the region. Whereas now, we are probably the third or fourth budget in Kenya. So for us, we have to be a bit more creative."

However, McKinstry's decision to take on this challenging role was driven by his belief in the potential of Gor Mahia.
"Gor Mahia will always be Gor Mahia; they are a huge club, a huge name, not only in Kenya but also in the African continent," he stated.
The gaffer also emphasized the importance of his role in providing leadership and guidance to the team.
"I looked at the situation, a club that needed a certain character to grab hold of them and give them that push to the top of the table. I know myself and the skills I bring, and more importantly, the skills that I lack in terms of who I need to have around me in terms of coaching staff and support.," he said.

"But at the same time, I understand that we need to make at least the same amount of improvement again in the next one and a half season if we are to reach those lofty goals of not only being competitive in Kenya but also being competitive on the continent as well," he concluded.
