Nottingham vs Newcastle: Back-to-back poor performance from Awoniyi as Newcastle defeat Forest

Stephen Oladehinde 20:51 - 10.02.2024

Nottingham Forest stumbled to a defeat to Newcastle at City Ground leaving them in 16th on the league table.

Taiwo Awoniy was in action for Forest but was not at his best as they fell to a 3-2 defeat to Newcastle United.

Bruno Guimaraes opened the scoring for Newcastle early in the first half before Anthony Elanga equalised. Schar gave the visitors the lead again before Hudson-Odoi scored the equaliser before the break.

Guimaraes's second goal of the game gave Newcastle the winning goal in the second half to add more woes to Nuno Espirito’s team.

As it happened

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo made eight changes to the side that needed extra time and penalties to beat Bristol City in the FA Cup on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe made just one change to the Newcastle starting line-up from last weekend's 4-4 draw against Luton.

Callum Wilson returns from injury to replace Jacob Murphy, while Anthony Gordon is fit to start after leaving the game against Luton on crutches.

Newcastle took the lead in the first 10 minutes when Kieran Trippier found Bruno Guimaraes in the area and he had just wriggled away from his defender and poked home with the side of his foot on the volley.

Nottingham Forest equalised shortly after when Morgan Gibbs-White charged forward, had a quick look up and found Anthony Elanga who slotted the ball into the back of the net.

The away side took the lead again after Bruno Guimaraes sent in the free-kick from a long way out and Fabian Schar headed it down before Sven Botman headed it back across the face of goal for Schar to smash in.

The home side responded immediately before the half-time break to make it 2-2 when Callum Hudson-Odoi fancied his chances from around 25 yards out. He hits it well but it takes a wicked deflection off Lewis Miley and nestles in the back of the net.

The second half resumed with both teams looking eager to get the game started. However, it was Newcastle that restored their lead.

Anthony Elanga gave the ball away cheaply on the edge of the area and Bruno Guimaraes calmly finished from the centre of the penalty box.

Newcastle managed the game very well and held on to the lead till the referee blew the whistle for the end of the game.
