What started as a call to passionate and loyal fans of Rwandan side Rayon Sports has gathered steam as they edge closer to achieving their target, fundraising the required sign-on fees of Joackim Ojera.

Ojera joined the Rwandan side on loan from URA FC last season. However, the club decided to make his move permanent, but the winger asked for Ugx 76M for his signature, which led to the club starting a fundraising drive on the 18th of July.

‘Gikundiro’ have since shared an update, confirming that the fans have so far raised Ugx 44m, with a balance of Ugx 32m remaining to raise the money required to sign the Ugandan international.

The fast-paced forward scored five goals and picked up seven assists last season, including being named the club’s February player of the season.

The nine-time Rwanda Premier League champions have stocked well ahead of the new season, bringing in two more Ugandans in forward Charles Bbaale and goalkeeper Simon Tamale.

Ojera’s addition would take the number of Ugandans at the club to four, with Musa Esenu completing the quartet.

Rayon Sports claimed the domestic cup for the first time since 2016 and will represent Rwanda in the CAF Confederation Cup; the side will look to better their 2018 quarter-final finish in the interclub competition.

The Rwandan top flight has attracted more Ugandans, including Taddeo Lwanga at APR FC and goalkeeper Mathias Muwanga at the newly promoted Etoile De L Est FC.
