In a bid to curb further clashes between fans, the prefect of Naples has banned natives of Frankfurt from attending the Napoli match

The UEFA Champions League tie between Frankfurt and Napoli has been given an unusual twist with the news that fans who reside in the city of Frankfurt will not be allowed to attend the match.

Naples prefect bans travelling Frankfurt fans

Clashes broke out between fans of Napoli and Frankfurt in the reverse fixture on February 21st before the start of the match, and authorities in Naples are eager to avoid a repeat scenario in the return fixture.

They initially instituted a ban on fans from Germany from coming into the city for the match, but that ban was overturned on Saturday after an appeal by Frankfurt’s lawyers.

However, a report by Calciomercato states that a new ban has been instituted by the prefect of Naples against only locals of the city of Frankfurt where the club is based.

Frankfurt to play Napoli without fans

This new ban is expected to achieve the same effects as the previous one since Frankfurt have little support outside its locality and will struggle to find any travelling support outside the city.

With just days until the UCL fixture, it remains unclear whether Frankfurt will be able to make another appeal against the ban, or if they will simply accept their fate and gather what little support they can from outside their city.

Frankfurt and Napoli played out an entertaining first-leg fixture in Germany, with I Partenopei securing a healthy advantage thanks to goals from Victor Osimhen and Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

After losing the first leg at home, Frankfurt faced an uphill battle to overcome the deficit and reach the quarterfinals ahead of Napoli, and that task will be made even harder if the ban on their travelling fans remains.
