On Monday, KCCA FC announced Portuguese coach Sergio Daniel Moniz Tiraguil as the team's new manager on a two-year deal.

The announcement ended any speculation surrounding the situation at the club, with Jackson Mayanja's interim role expiring at the end of June.

Sergio's appointment will surprise many, considering the different names that have been thrown around as being linked with the big job at the MTN Omondi Stadium.

Sergio is a Portuguese tactician who started his coaching career at Sports Lisboa e Benfica, where he was in charge of the club’s youth teams before joining Kaduna United in Nigeria.

The appointment is also a rare one at a club where former stars have been considered for the job. No KCCA coach has won the league without having played for the club in the past.

Many Ugandans are hearing about Sergio Daniel Moniz Tiraguil for the first time and will be eager to see what he brings to the table in Ugandan football.

Going by searches on the internet, it is hard to come across Sergio's career as a player, with most of the focus on his coaching profession.

He is a 42-year-old, born on October 18, 1980, in Portalegre, Portugal. And `by merely looking at where he has been before, it is easy to tell Sergio is a man of short stints.

He started his coaching career at Sports Lisboa e Benfica, where he was in charge of the club's youth teams before joining Kaduna United in Nigeria.

After four months at Kaduna, Sergio returned to Portugal and was in charge of his home team Portalegre between June 2014 and March 2015.

He then returned to Africa in 2016 and took charge at Hearts of Oaks in Ghana for six months and went on to manage other teams on the continent like Singida Big Stars (Tanzania), CD Luanda Sul (Angola), Santa Rita CFC (Angola), and most recently Township Rollers in Botswana.

The manager is expected to take charge on July 1, and his immediate target will be preparing the team for the CAF Confederation Cup Preliminary rounds set for August.

Winning the League and Cup remain KCCA's primary targets going into every season, and ending the four-year drought will be high on the agenda.

KCCA's last piece of silverware came in the 2019 CECAFA Club Championship.
