The losing bonus point picked on Saturday leaves Pirates on 29 points, one behind Kobs and Heathens.

It is hard to win a league title in the first round of a season but quite easy to lose it.

That is the kind of situation Kobs were in as they faced Stanbic Black Pirates at the King’s Park Arena on Saturday.

Defeat would have realistically left Brian Makalama’s charges in a bad place in regards to the title race.

It is just seven games into the Nile Special Rugby Premier League season so it is safe to say it is still early days.

Kobs top

The 30-25 win for the Blue Army over the Sea Robbers was enough for the former to ascend to the top of the log.

Kobs went into the game on 26 points, two behind leaders Pirates (28).

Ian Munyani’s last minute try was enough to hand Kobs four points from the game to see them leapfrog Marvin Odongo’s Pirates.

Pirates started the season the perfect way, defeating defending champions Heathens 24-18 in the opener.

But their six-game winning streak came to an end, and so did their stay at the top of the log.

In fact, the Sea Robbers are now third on the log following Heathens’ bonus point victory over Rams.

Muhammad Athiyo’s Heathens demolished Rams 78-08 to collect maximum points and improve their points difference.

The losing bonus point picked on Saturday leaves Pirates on 29 points, one behind Kobs and Heathens.

Kobs are ahead of Heathens on points difference, 221 compared to Heathens’ 190.

Impis, who started the season with five straight wins, lost their second of the season against Toyota Buffaloes.

Their five wins, however, have them fourth on the log, on 20 points, five ahead of sixth-placed Jinja Hippos.

Rams continue to be the weeping boys of the season and are yet to win any single game.

They occupy the last place on the table with just five points and a points difference of -169.
