CAFCL: Double tragedy as Enyimba and Remo Stars disappoint Nigerians with Ghana winning again
NPFL champions Enyimba and Remo Stars have crashed out of the CAF Champions League, CAFCL.
Enyimba and Remo suffered double defeats in Aba and Ikenne respectively to Ahly Benghazi and Medeama SC on Sunday.
The People’s Elephant and the Sky Blues failed to make home advantage count as they failed in the first round of the qualifiers.
Enyimba crashed out after losing 4-3 on aggregate while Remo were booted out by their visitors on penalties.
Enyimba vs Benghazi
NPFL champions went into the second leg confident of getting a positive result after a gallant performance in the first leg.
Enyimba lost narrowly following a 4-3 win for the home side last weekend.
Finidi George’s men came into the second leg hoping to turn things around in their favour.
However, the Elephants failed to find the decisive goals that would have seen them safely through to the next phase.
Benghazi held on for a goalless affair that earned them a 4-3 aggregate win and a ticket to the next round.
Remo vs Medeama
In Ikenne, Remo Stars, who finished behind Enyimba last season in the NPFL, found themselves in a similar situation.
The Sky Blues lost 1-0 to the Ghanaian champions last week and were optimistic of getting the job done at home.
Unlike their counterparts from Aba, the Elephants, the Sky Blues did win their second 1-0 at home to force the game into a penalty shoot.
It was in the shootout that the home side failed to keep their calm as Medeama sealed a 3-2 win to progress.
