The France captain hit the net and provided an assist in Les Bleus’ 2-1 victory over Iceland in World Cup qualifying, ensuring the night belonged to him despite the scrappy contest.

Mbappe shines as France edge past Iceland

Didier Deschamps’ side dominated much of the first half, carving chances through Marcus Thuram, Michael Olise, and Manu Koné, only to be denied by Iceland goalkeeper Elias Rafn Olafsson.

Against the run of play, a mistake from Olise gifted Andri Gudjohnsen the opener, punishing France’s lapse in concentration.

But moments before the break, Mikael Anderson fouled Thuram inside the box, and Mbappé coolly dispatched the penalty to restore parity and edge past Henry in the scoring charts.

The momentum carried into the second half as France pushed harder. Olise struck the bar from distance before Aurélien Tchouaméni’s precise ball unlocked the Iceland defence.

Mbappé, showing maturity, squared unselfishly for Bradley Barcola to score, securing France’s lead. His influence on the night was undeniable, directly involved in both goals and rewriting French football history with every strike he adds to his tally.

France hold firm after red card drama

France’s evening wasn’t without nerves. Tchouaméni’s reckless studs-up challenge earned him a straight red, forcing Deschamps’ men to retreat and play cautiously with ten men.

Iceland thought they had snatched a dramatic equaliser late on when Gudjohnsen bundled the ball in, but the referee spotted a foul on Ibrahima Konaté in the build-up.

With their resilience tested, France held firm to claim their second win of qualifying, following their earlier triumph over Ukraine.

The result not only kept Les Bleus on course for the World Cup but also marked a symbolic passing of the torch, as Mbappé officially left Henry behind in the record books, with only Olivier Giroud now ahead of him.
