Stunning turnaround - €68 Million transfer collapses for Tottenham as Gibbs-White signs new contract
Morgan Gibbs-White's transfer to Tottenham appeared to be a done deal, with the release clause activated and a medical scheduled.
However, it collapsed amid accusations leveled against Spurs by the midfielder's club, Nottingham Forest. Ultimately, the England international signed a contract extension with Forest.
Gibbs-White was seemingly set to be Tottenham's second major summer signing, following Mohammed Kudus from West Ham. His arrival from Nottingham Forest looked like a formality, but everything fell apart after Forest accused Spurs of tapping up the player.
Morgan Gibbs-White signs new contract
Tottenham had informed Nottingham Forest that they would activate the £60 million (approximately €68 million) release clause and scheduled Gibbs-White's medical.
However, the medical never took place after Forest threatened to report Spurs, questioning how the London club knew about the private clauses in the player's contract.
With the transfer in limbo, Gibbs-White joined Forest's pre-season training camp in Portugal and on Saturday signed a three-year contract extension, as reported by GSP.
What was his reaction to the club's media channels? "From the moment I arrived, I've felt at home at Forest. The support from the fans, my teammates, and everyone at the club has been incredible. I believe in what we're building here, with Evangelos Marinakis' backing and his huge ambition. I want to be a part of building something special. I'm excited for what's to come."
Of course, Evangelos Marinakis, the club's controversial owner, was present for the photo opportunity announcing the new Forest-Gibbs-White agreement, which was presented, naturally, in a positive light:
"A statement of intent from our owner, Evangelos Marinakis, with Morgan Gibbs-White signing a club-record contract until the summer of 2028."
It's a significant move for Forest, who have already lost a key player this summer with Anthony Elanga's €61 million transfer to Newcastle.
