Boniface joined Werder Bremen on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen, with the deal completed on the final day of the summer transfer window.

The loan, which does not come with an option to buy, sees Werder Bremen covering a portion of Boniface’s salary.

This move followed a failed transfer to Italian giants AC Milan, which had left Boniface’s future in some doubt.

To celebrate the signing and to resonate with Boniface’s Nigerian heritage, Werder Bremen posted a message in pidgin English:

“𝐌𝐞𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭, 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐚 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝” - a vibrant and relatable shoutout that Nigerian fans quickly embraced across their socials.

In related news, the European football landscape for Boniface saw upheaval as his former Bayer Leverkusen coach Erik ten Hag was unexpectedly sacked after just three games in charge.

This surprising decision by the former German champions had both Boniface (before his transfer) and fellow Nigerian Super Eagles forward Nathan Tella without a manager just weeks into the season.

Ten Hag’s dismissal has shocked many, given his profile as a former Manchester United manager and the fact it had come after just three official matches.
