Athletics Cheptegei leads Uganda challenge at World Cross Country

There are hopes for the runners Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo to ensure they win the race as it was in 2019 in Denmark.

Some of the finest cross-country runners in Uganda and from across the world will be in Bathurst, Australia for the 2023 World Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

Mount Panorama Circuit will be the venue for the 44th edition of the championship as they return for the first time in four years since they were held in Aarhus, Denmark in 201.

This will be only the second time the even is held in Oceania since Auckland in 1988, and the first time for Australia to host.

The Ugandan delegation for the championship under coach Benjamin Njia is already in transit for the championship, with hope of building on their strong performance from Denmark 2019.

"The preparations are over and now all we have left is to get to Australia to compete. I have confidence in my team and I know it is our victory," Njia said.

Uganda finished third with six medals, including two gold, two silver and two bronze in 2019. Uganda won the men’s category after winning two gold and silver medals by Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo.

There are hopes for the runners; Cheptegei and Kiplimo to ensure they win the race as it was in 2019 in Denmark.

Cheptegei is aiming to win the race for the second time in a row while Jacob Kiplimo is aiming to win it for the first time after finishing second in 2019.

In the women’s category, the eyes are on Prisca Chesang, Stella Chesang and Mercyline Chelangat with many expecting youngster Prisca Chesang to return with a medal.

There is also hope that Cherop Rispa, Chebet Peace, Cherop Charity, Yeko Ventalin, and Chepkwemoi Felista can secure Uganda’s first ever medal in the women’s junior category.
