Running her inaugural Sound Track Fest, a World Athletics silver-rated event, Halimah Nakaayi won gold in the 800m in Los Angeles, USA, over the weekend.

The 2019 800m world champion posted 2:00.21, beating Claire Seymour and McKenna Keegan, who clocked 2: 00.81 and 2:02.32, respectively.

Speaking at the race, Nakaayi says she is focusing on participating in the Diamond League ahead of the 2023 World Championships in Budapest. She hopes the races will improve her competitiveness for the big occasion.

"I am excited to compete at Sound Track and open my season with a win. This year is for the World Championships, Budapest. I am focusing more on competing in the Diamond League," Nakaayi said.

"I look forward to competing at the Paris Diamond League to keep checking on my fitness level," she added.

Nakaayi lost her crown last year to America's Athing Mu at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA, as she failed to make it to the finals, falling out in the semi-finals.

In a bid to make amends, Nakaayi stormed the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 800m finals but failed to make it to the podium.
