In the 21km race, Abel Chebet covered the distance in 01:02:56 ahead to beat Ben Somikwo Chelimo (01:02:57) to the top prize.

Two teenagers became the first winners at the 2023 Tusker Lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon after returning home first in the 5km race.

18-year old Herbert Kibet crossed the finish line first to win the race while 17-year-old Thomas Cheptoyek came third.

The two sandwiched Barnabas Mugume, who came second in the day’s shortest race to mark the second edition of the marathon.

In the 21km race, Abel Chebet covered the distance in 01:02:56 ahead to beat Ben Somikwo Chelimo (01:02:57) to the top prize.

The two were followed by Norman Kipyeko (01:03:02), Oscar Kibet (01:03:02) and Thomas Ayeko (01:03:10) to complete the top five.

Big deal

The marathon has attracted personalities from all walks of life , with lite runners, journalists, politicians and celebrated athletics Rob Walker among those who made the trip to Kasese.

Runners woke up as early as 5am to assemble at the starting point ready for the three different categories of racing.

First, it was the 42km race that was flagged off and this was followed by 21km and 5km.

The event organizers aim to create a world class running event while celebrating the beauty and majesty of the Rwenzori mountain.

In the same breath, the second edition aims at promoting healthy living, boost tourism in the region and support local communities through the power of running
