The former Uganda Gazelles U18 player became the fifth US-based player to join the team.

As the Uganda Gazelles continue preparations for the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket, more superstars are trickling in.

The latest to join the team is US-based centre Maria Najjuma, who was part of Wednesday’s training session at the Africa Bible University in Lubowa.

The former Uganda Gazelles U18 player became the fifth US-based player to join the team.

Jane Asinde, Priscilla Abby, Victoria Mukisa and Lydia Babirye were the first lot to jet in from the US and have been part of all the three training sessions.

Under the tutelage of assistant coach Nicholas Natuhereza, the team had its first session Monday morning at Africa Bible University in Lubowa with ten players.

Flavia Oketcho, Shakirah Nanvubya, Bridget Aber, Melissa Akullu, Janon Otto and Claire Lamunu are the players yet to turn up for training.

JKL Lady Dolphins’ small forward Leticia Awor is still nursing an injury and is likely to miss out on all the sessions.

Nanvubya and Aber are part of the team representing Uganda at the FIBA 3X3 Nations League in Kinshasa, DRC.

The Gazelles are scheduled to train until July 15, when the final 12 will be announced. Those will then enter residential camp for two weeks before flying out to Kigali, Rwanda, for the tournament.

Uganda is in Group C alongside giants Senegal and Mali.

The Afrobasket tournament will run from July 28 to August 6.
