Mavita was among 28 basketball coaches from 17 African countries who were selected to participate in the NBA 2K24 Summer League that took place in Las Vegas, Nevada, from July 7-17, 2023.

Uganda Gazelles assistant coach Ali Mavita is the latest to join the team ahead of the Fiba Women’s Afrobasket 2023.

The tactician returned from the US Tuesday morning and joined the Gazelles for training Wednesday morning at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

Mavita was among 28 basketball coaches from 17 African countries who were selected to participate in the NBA 2K24 Summer League that took place in Las Vegas, Nevada, from July 7-17, 2023.

The selected coaches formed part of the Africa Coaches Program, which builds on NBA Africa’s and Basketball Africa League’s (BAL) commitment to building the capacity and expertise of coaches from across the continent, improving the quality of the on-court product, and contributing to the continued growth of basketball in Africa.

Most of the coaches selected represented teams that have participated in the BAL.

City Oilers’ assistant coach Andrew Tendo was also part of the program.

Mavita worked with the San Antonio Spurs but is now entirely focused on the Gazelles.

She will now look to use some of the knowledge attained to help Uganda at the Afrobasket in Kigali, Rwanda.

Uganda will face Mali in her first game of the tournament on July 28 before taking on record champions Senegal the next day.

Mavita was the assistant coach the last time Uganda played at Afrobasket, and her experience will come in handy.
