Kenya finished a disappointing 17th place amidst organizational hiccups, Morocco claims glory with eight gold medals.

The 2023 Africa Boxing Championships came to a thrilling conclusion in Yaoundé, Cameroon over the weekend, with Morocco shining brightly as they secured their best-ever performance and emerged as the overall winners with an impressive haul of eight gold, two silver, and three bronze medals.

However, for Kenya's boxing national team alias Hit Squad, it was a disappointing outing as they settled for seven bronze medals and a lackluster 17th place in the continental event.

The one-week boxing spectacle showcased the talents of Africa's finest pugilists, each vying for glory and recognition on the international stage.

But as the dust settled, it was evident that Kenya's contingent failed to live up to expectations, leaving fans and supporters disheartened.

Robert Okaka, David Karanja, Peter Abuti, Amina Martha, Shaffi Bakari, Elizabeth Adiego, and Christine Ongare were the valiant warriors who brought home the bronze medals for Kenya.

Each bronze medal winner was rewarded with a prize of $5000 (Ksh 715,000), a modest consolation for their efforts.

Kenya's disappointment was exacerbated by what their coach, Benjamin Musa, described as poor organization and last-minute changes to the match schedules.

"We were not happy with the organization since the draws were made. Some matches' starting time were changed with short notice which affected our boxers,” he said.

Such unexpected alterations to the schedule undoubtedly disrupted the boxers' preparations and mental focus, contributing to their subpar performance.

On the brighter side, Morocco's sensational showing served as an inspiration for African boxing.

The North African nation's boxers displayed skill, tenacity, and determination, clinching a total of thirteen medals to claim the championship's top spot.

At the forefront of the medal tally, DR Congo secured a commendable second place with an impressive haul of five gold, six silver, and four bronze medals.

Algeria followed in third place with four gold, two silver, and one bronze medal, showing that North African nations continue to dominate the sport in the region.

Cameroon, the host nation, also had a respectable showing, finishing in fourth place with two gold, two silver, and eight bronze medals.
