Moses Muhangi is accused of misappropriating government funds last financial year.

The president of the Uganda Boxing Federation, Moses Muhangi, has scoffed at the people and bodies behind his legal battles who allege that he misappropriated funds last financial year.

Muhangi and UBF found themselves in a tight spot after an audit report discovered discrepancies in their financial report for the 2021/2022 financial year.

The report revealed that about shs.3.5 million given to the federation was unaccounted for.

That led to his arrest, where he spent about 12 days in detention before being granted bail last week.

Muhangi insists on his innocence and connects his battles to his fight for a fair allocation of the sports budget.

“You cannot think that you are going to suppress people’s voices just because they say things that you don’t want to hear,” Muhangi says.

“My concern since as far as 2018 is the issue of funds distribution criteria at the [National] Sports Council. I want to state clearly that I am an innocent person, and there’s no way the Muhangi that people have known could be involved in forging documents with a motive to embezzle $850!

Beer money

“That is not the amount of money that would be an issue to me because that’s about shs3.5 million; those who know me for long know that this is the kind of money that we’d go to the bar and drink beer and eat food with,” he adds.

Muhangi is required to return to court on July 20th.
