The Botswana Zebras have touched down in Kenya in time for Wednesday’s final round of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Harambee Starlets

Botswana have arrived in Kenya ahead of their final 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Harambee Starlets on Wednesday.

Kenya, who stunned Cameroon 5-4 on post-match penalties to sail through to the final round of qualifiers, have been in camp since last week and will be seeking a win to secure a place at next year’s tournament in what will be their second appearance since their debut in 2016.

Botswana will be no pushovers, however, as they made their debut at WAFCON in 2022 and put up an impressive performance by winning one match which saw them make it to the quarter-final before falling 2-1 to losing finalists Morocco.

The Southern African nation come into the match against Kenya high on confidence after crushing Gabon 10-1 on aggregate, meaning the Starlets have their work cut out.

It is the first meeting between the two sides and Kenya will hope to get a victory at home which will put them in good stead for the second leg in Gaborone.

Starlets coach Beldine Odemba called 29 players to camp for the two-legged encounter against the Zebras with a bulk of those who took part in the match against Cameroon being retained while Vihiga Queens’ Mercyline Wayodi and FK Apolonia Fier Lorna Nyarinda are making a comeback.

Joining the squad for the first time are Kenya Police Bullets goalkeeper Mishi Mbaru, Bungoma Queens defender Centrine Wasike and forwards Rebecca Okwaro and Nancy Atako who play for Kenya Police Bullets and Kibera Soccer Ladies respectively.

Graduating to the senior team from Rising Starlets is the Ulinzi Starlets duo of Joy Kinglady and Fasila Odhiambo.

The first leg will be played at Nyayo Stadium on Wednesday with the second leg in Botswana on December 5.
