The Uganda Cranes might witness a return of a familiar face in the dugout, pending the confirmation of the new head coach by the local football governing body, FUFA.

Pulse Sports has reliably learned that among the 245 applications for the head coach position received by FUFA, a former head coach, Sebastien Desabre, is notably in the mix.

Currently engaged with DR. Congo, Desabre is contemplating a return to coaching the Uganda Cranes, reminiscing his successful stint that witnessed the team’s qualification to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Desabre assumed the role of the Cranes coach in 2017, signing a two-year contract, and departed in 2019 after steering the Cranes to the round of 16 in Cairo, Egypt. His exit was marred by controversies surrounding player bonus disputes at the tournament.

FUFA confirmed receipt of applications from a total of 10 Ugandans for various roles including Head Coach (2), Assistant Coach (2), Strength and Conditioning (5), and Goalkeeper Coach (1).

"Status of the Uganda Cranes Technical Team Recruitment; By 1700 Hours on 22 September 2023, the official closing time for the applications for the jobs of the National Men's Team (A)- Uganda Cranes," a segment of the official announcement read.

"The applications received included: Head Coach 245 (2 Ugandans), Assistant Coach 34 (2 Ugandans), Strength and Conditioning 24 (5 Ugandans), Goalkeeping Coach 7 (1 Ugandan)."

The position of the Cranes head coach became available after the former head coach, Milutin Micho Sredejovic, mutually agreed to part ways with FUFA on 14 September.

Desabre, who was instated as an emergency Leopards coach in August 2022, succeeding Hector Cooper, managed to guide DRC to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations despite the initial losses in the first two qualifiers.
