Six-time Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC needed their resilient best to pick an important 2-1 victory over Gaddafi FC on Sunday.

A league opener on enemy territory is always challenging, but the Venoms managed to dig deep with the help of goals from Karisa and Mohamed Salem Ekbad.

"Yeah, definitely: intense, quick against difficult opposition. It was what we expected.

"It is always difficult coming to Jinja, and we expected a difficult game, and that's what we got," Karisa told the club media.

"We take the three points, no shame; we could have scored more, but we also could have drawn it, so we take the points."

Vipers had two first-half goals, but Benson Muhindo grabbed one earlier in the second half to have the champions under pressure for the remainder of the game.

"At a place like this, the atmosphere and the momentum shifts and from that point on, they kind of controlled everything."

"I think there was a point in the game when we all kind of realised that this was a game that we don't want to lose rather than control and win."

"So although we kept attacking and we wanted to try to win it, it was to make sure defensively we're sound, we work on it as a unit, and there's no shame in playing for the point at a certain time," Karisa added.

Vipers hopes to keep maximum points in their next tie when they host strugglers Arua Hill SC at the St Mary's Stadium, Kitende on Thursday.
